The SNP Peek series brings you concise, up-to-date information on genetic variations known as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), which affect a significant percentage of patients. The SNPs featured in this series are clinically relevant, nutritionally actionable and validated by published research. Featuring one SNP at a time, the series will educate you/readers/viewers about prevalence, important research findings, targeted nutritional supplements and monitoring.* To apply this information in practice quickly and easily, visit PureGenomics.com.
Who is Affected?

The SNP, defined as the Alanine (Ala, C, or +) variant, is highly prevalent across many ethnic groups. More than 60% of Americans of Northern and Western European ancestry are affected, with over 20% being homozygous (CC, +/+ or Ala/Ala).2

Clinical Relevance:

Cellular health. The SNP may affect breast and prostate health. The most significant and consistent findings have come from studies that also examined diet. According to these studies, higher antioxidant intake reduced or nullified the effect of the SNP.3-6*

The Research:

In homozygous premenopausal women, higher intakes of fruits and vegetables and of vitamins C and E moderated the impact of the Ala variant on breast health.3
In a study involving 2,322 women, those who consumed adequate selenium, carotenoids, and vitamin C and E were most likely to maintain long-term breast health.4*
In two case control studies, higher dietary antioxidant intakes reduced or nullified the effect of the SNP on long-term prostate health.5,6*
Expression of SOD2 and other antioxidant genes is supported by the Nrf2 pathway, which favorably responds to cruciferous vegetables and certain antioxidants. Sulforaphane and resveratrol support SOD2 expression via Nrf2 (Figure 1).7-11*

PureGenomics® Products:

PureGenomic® Multivitamin provides manganese, vitamin E and selenium to support SOD2 and other antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase and glutathione peroxidase.12*

Ascorbic Acid or Buffered Ascorbic Acid (powder or capsules) helps to protect the interior (matrix) of the mitochondria from superoxide and hydrogen peroxide.13-16*

Astaxanthin moderates oxidative stress and supports healthy levels of SOD2 in the body.17-19*

Suggested Monitoring:
ENutrEva® FMV (Genova Diagnostics) includes analysis of antioxidant status as part of a comprehensive evaluation. The Oxidative Stress Analysis 2.0 (Genova Diagnostics) provides a more in-depth assessment of antioxidant defenses.
Urinary F2-isoprostanes are also useful in assessing and monitoring systemic antioxidant status.
