Presented by Kelly Heim, Ph.D.

The brain is a structurally and functionally unique organ that requires dietary amino acids, fatty acids and cholesterol to maintain homeostasis. Amino acids from dietary protein serve as indispensable building blocks for neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, and for neuropeptides that regulate emotions, thoughts, behavior, cognition, sleep and appetite. Lipids such as omega-3 fatty acids and cholesterol are critical for neuronal structure and neurotransmitter receptor function. Even at adequate intakes, absorption and CNS utilization of these macronutrients are heavily influenced by digestive enzymes, gastric pH, stress and other factors. James Greenblatt, M.D. is an Integrative Psychiatrist and Chief Medical Officer of Walden Behavioral Care in Waltham, MA, and a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Tufts Medical School. In over two decades of clinical psychiatric practice, Dr. Greenblatt has guided numerous patients to mental well-being through evidence-based integrative approaches. In this webinar, Dr. Greenblatt will provide tips on functional medicine testing, summarize clinical research and provide practical information on dosage and combinations of these critical dietary elements for emotional wellness, cognitive performance and neuroprotection.
